Economic development in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, increased the demand for fresh water, groundwater being the main source. Excessive groundwater extraction results in subsidence and salinization of groundwater reserves. Recent research - Rise & Fall project (NWO project nr. W 07.69.105) - has determined the extent and geographical distribution of subsidence and of the groundwater reserves. This information is of paramount importance for policy makers, national and regional governments and for creating awareness among the general public. Currently this information is not publicly available, as it is mainly stored in scientific papers and datasets of researchers.

The aim of the proposed project is to make the information available for all stakeholders by means of a user-friendly Internet-based application. The information will be accessible through an interactive map of the Mekong Delta. This map provides the entry point to information about subsidence (current rates and predicted rates in the future), and groundwater (geohydrological units, fresh / brackish / saline groundwater distribution and freshwater volumes). There will be the option to zoom in into a user-defined specific area and to select provinces in the Mekong Delta to obtain information of subsidence and fresh groundwater reserves.
